Introduction:
NBK hospital peadiatric pharmacy is a part of
pharmacy department in Al-Sabah Hospital. The pharmacy department in
Al-Sabah hospital consists of many pharmacies, the head to the
department is pharmacist Salwa Al-Dahmali and there is a serereatary
section. The pharmacies are as follows: Central Pharmacy, medical
department pharmacy, casualty pharmacy, NBK peadiatric pharmacy,
Asaad Al Hamad dermatology center pharmacy, MTC hospital for E.N.T
Pharmacy, Medical Store, drug manufacturing unit and I.V room (under
construction).
NBK
Peadiatric Pharmacy
The pharmacy in NBK peadiatric hospital opens at the morning shift
only from 7:00 am till 2:00 pm and dispenses for the following
departments:

1 – Out patient and casualty clinics:-
The Pharmacy dispenses medicine for the following clinics:-
Leukemia clinic, thalasemia clinic, neurology clinic, neuro
developmental clinic, asthma clinic, nephrology clinic,
endocrinology clinic, immunity clinic, genetic clinic, psychology
clinic, general clinic and casualty clinic.
2 – Wards
The pharmacy serves ward patients in the peadiatric department. It
consists of 10 wards which are ICU, two hematology wards, neurology
ward and general wards.
3 – Medical store
Providing medicine to the pharmacy and disposables to patients.
The work of the pharmacy

Providing medicine from central medical store
(CMS) in Sabhan every other week.

Requesting psychotropic medicines from
central pharmacy.

Recording and checking of in-coming and
out-going medicine and checking the expiry dates.

Dispensing the weekly medicine for the wards
and for inpatients depending on the length of stay.
The work
in the peadiatric medical store:
-
Routine check of pharmacy needs of medicine
to be ordered from CMS.

Receiving the medicine deliveried from CMS
and checking the items description, quantity and expiry date.

Classification of the injections, tablets and
preparations and setting them in the desired place.
Psychotropic medicine
-
There is a special closet and special record
for psychotropic medicines. These items are requested from central
pharmacy which in turn request them from CMS.

The pharmacy gets special numbered and
stamped prescription book and hand them to each nurse in charge of
each ward.

Checking the expiry dates with the pharmacist
in-charge of these medicines in central pharmacy.
Dispensing for out patient clinics
-
Dispensing occurs daily for the out patient
clinics and for the casualty in the morning only. In the after
noon, weekends and holidays dispensing for casualty clinic is
from casualty pharmacy in Al-Sbah Hospital.
The dispensing occurs for patient carrying a prescription from
hospital clinics consisting of:

Patients name, file number or prescription
number and the clinic stamp.

Patients civil ID number
-
Reception stamp
-
Doctors stamp and signature
Pharmacist In-Charge Responsibilities:
-
Requesting pharmacy needs of general,
special, controlled, freshly prepared medicine and drugs of decision
365/97.

Checking special medicine request from
special drug office in CMS and making a list of new medicine and
medicine in shortage and distributing then to the physicians.

Supervising the process of receiving medicine
from CMS and checking quantity and expiry date.

Arranging the work and the leaves (vacation)
of the employees in the pharmacy.

Answering physicians pharmacological &
medicinal questions
-
Assenting shortage of medicine with the head
of pharmacy department & CMS.

Requesting psychotropic medicine from central
pharmacy.

Supervising the training of pharmacy &
pharmacy technician students.
-
Making monthly statistics of dispensed
medicines and sending then to the central pharmacy.
Ward
Pharmacy
-
Physicians start the round in the
morning, then medicine will be written for each patient on the file,
and the treatment sheet and on a small white prescription.

After physicians finishes the round ward
pharmacist check the written medicine and the dose, then he writes
the quantity of the medicine to be dispensed.

A medicine trolley will be sent with the
prescriptions to the pharmacy.

Ward nurse comes to the pharmacy to check the
dispensed medicine.

Ward nurse in-charge writes weekly ward needs
of medicine on a special pharmacy book.

Ward pharmacist checks ward needs and writes
the quantity to be dispensed and a pharmacy technician dispense it.
Making routine
inventory on all wards to check the quantity, storing and expiry
date of the medicine in all wards.
